The top 3 procedures to have you looking heavenly for the holidays

Want to look your very best this holiday season? If so, these three beautifying procedures are a must.

Blepharoplasty – schedule 1 month before the holidays

We all want to look bright-eyed and cheerful for the holidays, but if you experience laxity of the upper eyelid you may find yourself looking tired, run down, and certainly not in the holiday spirit. It’s normal for this laxity to occur with age as the delicate skin on the eyelid loses volume, but it can be rectified with blepharoplasty.

Also known as an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure which lifts lax tissue on the eyelid to make the eyes look brighter and more alert. It’s also possible to deal with “eye bags” underneath the eyes which are caused by loose fat pads which pull the eye downwards and create dark circles.

Results of blepharoplasty are almost immediate, but you will see some mild bruising and swelling in the area for a 1-2 weeks. If you schedule the procedure around a month before the holidays, you’ll be all healed up, with bright, beautiful eyes, just in time for the celebrations.

Botox – schedule around 2 weeks before the holidays

We’d all love to say goodbye to pesky lines and wrinkles before the holidays, and with Botox you can. Wrinkles occur as a result of repetitive movements of the facial muscles which cause skin to fold, often on the forehead and brow (causing “frown lines”) and around the eyes (“crows’ feet”). Botox temporarily weakens the muscles in order to prevent them from creating these lines and wrinkles, allowing you to enjoy a smoother complexion and a younger, more refreshed appearance.

Botox only takes a few minutes for Dr. Wise to inject and there is no recovery time, making it the perfect treatment to schedule in during the busy weeks leading up to the holidays. Results aren’t immediate and show themselves anywhere from 3 – 10 days after the procedure, so be sure to make an appointment 2 weeks before the holiday season. You’ll be able to enjoy the effects for up to three months, which is plenty of time to show off your youthful new looks over the seasonal celebrations.

Dermal fillers – schedule a few days before the holidays

It’s amazing what dermal fillers can do; from restoring facial volume in the cheeks, smoothing out acne scars, restoring volume to the eyes and lifting sagging skin to plumping the pout and eliminating deep wrinkles, the likes of Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma and Radiesse have some truly wonderful applications. With immediate results which last between six months to 2 years , there’s no wonder injectable fillers are on your to-do list before the holiday season.

There’s no downtime involved when having dermal fillers, but you should still give yourself a few days between the treatment and the holidays to completely heal. It’s not unusual to experience a little mild swelling and bruising, so by scheduling a two or three days in advance of the celebrations you can make sure you’re looking your absolute best.

Book your procedures now to secure your schedule by calling our office at 973-305-1400.

The lead-up to the holidays is one of the busiest times of year here at the Wise Center, so make sure you don’t miss out on your essential procedures – book your blepharoplasty, Botox and dermal fillers appointments as soon as you can!

7 Things to Know About Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as the “eyelid lift,” is an eyelid surgical procedure most commonly performed to correct sagging around the eyes and restore a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty is among the most popular cosmetic procedures performed each year, and it is on the upswing largely for its reasonable cost, fast recovery time and overall effectiveness. In 2012, it was the third most popular cosmetic procedure, with about a 4 percent increase from the year prior.

But if you’re thinking about blepharoplasty, there is a lot more to know about the procedure before you have it performed. And while your surgeon will likely be covering many of these points with you during the initial consultation, we’ve decided to do it here too. With that being said, here’s a look at 7 things to know about blepharoplasty:

  1. It’s not just for sagging: While sagging eyelids is arguably the biggest correction associated with the procedure, blepharoplasty can also correct the likes of puffiness in the upper eyelids (typically caused by excess fatty deposits), folds around the eyelid, bags underneath the eyes, wrinkles and excess skin.
  2. Not everyone is an ideal candidate for the procedure. In fact, the best candidates are said to be adult men or women who have healthy facial tissue and healthy facial muscles. Non-smokers and those absent of medical conditions that may prevent proper healing are also ideal for the procedure. That’s why an initial consultation is so important for this procedure, to make sure that a patient will receive the full benefits from it.
  3. Recovery is short: Compared to other cosmetic procedures, blepharoplasty recovery time is short. Typically, patients can resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days. Major post-op side effects include swelling, bruising, irritation and dry eyes, all of which are treated with medication and ointment. Results are long-lasting: While results vary on a patient-to-patient basis, generally speaking an individual can expect the blepharoplasty procedure to have long-lasting results.
  4. It’s comparatively low-cost: Cosmetic surgery procedures aren’t cheap, but blepharoplasty is among the most affordable – unquestionably a factor in its surge in popularity over the years. It’s effective: In addition to minimal risk, the procedure is also highly effective. It’s so effective in restoring a youthful appearance that many people are now opting to just have blepharoplasty, rather than an entire facelift.
  5. It’s quick: Blepharoplasty is a fast procedure, usually one that can be completed in as little as an hour, at the most, 2 hours. For this reason, and the minimal risks that are posed with the procedure, it’s usually an outpatient surgery, where patients are permitted to go home following the procedure to begin their recovery.

As you can see, when it comes to blepharoplasty, the benefits largely outweigh the risks for most patients. For more information, or to schedule a consultation, contact us today.

What is Blepharoplasty and Why Do You Need It?

Blepharoplasty is a big word with a simple meaning. It means cosmetic surgery done on the eyelids. Some patients opt for this surgery to correct a congenital defect while others just want to improve the way their eyes look. Regardless of why you are considering blepharoplasty, the first step is educating yourself about the procedure and what you can expect from it.

Why Get a blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is performed to fix specific problems around the eyes. It could be related to aging like wrinkles or be a functional concern that interferes with vision. Some common reasons the doctor may recommend blepharoplasty include:

  • Loose, saggy upper lid skin
  • The eyelid doesn’t follow the natural contour and impairs vision
  • Fatty deposits causing the eyelids to look puffy
  • Bags under the eyes
  • A droopy lower lid
  • Excess skin on lower lid

For many people, blepharoplasty offers a way to rejuvenate their eyes, giving them a younger, brighter look by removing fine wrinkles and tightening the skin.

The Procedure
Blepharoplasty is done under either sedation or general anesthesia. Once you are out, the doctor will make one or more incisions, placed to conceal any resulting scars within the natural structures of the eyes. For example, an incision to fix the upper lid will be hidden in the crease.

During the procedure, the surgeon may:

  • Remove or reposition excess fat
  • Tighten the muscles
  • Remove excess skin

Once the corrections are complete, the skin is closed using removable sutures, skin adhesives or surgical tape.

What are The Risks?
Issues like a reaction to the anesthesia or infection are possible with any surgical procedure. Other risks to be aware of with blepharoplasty include:

  • Bleeding from the incisions
  • Eye dryness
  • Difficulty closing your eyes
  • Ectropion – lid rolling
  • Temporary droop of the lower lid

Serious complications like eye injury or changes in vision are exceedingly rare.

Post-Op
Initially, you can expect a considerable degree of swelling and bruising. This is a natural response to the surgery. Within a few days, the swelling and discoloration will start to fade, revealing smoother skin and better definition.

The staff will provide you with instructions for post-op care. This may include applying cold compresses and lubricating ointment as you heal. The doctor may prescribe medication to improve the healing process and reduce the risk of infection, as well.

It will be necessary to protect your eyes and skin from the sun during the recovery period. The doctor will advise you to wear sun protection and dark sunglasses when going outdoors even for short periods.

Who Qualifies for Blepharoplasty?
It is up to the doctor to decide if you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty, but there are specific criteria that improve your chances of success.

  • You should be healthy with no medical problems that may interfere with healing such as diabetes.
  • Preferably be a non-smoker
  • Have a clear understanding of your goals for the procedure
  • Be free of any serious eye problems

The physician will do a full evaluation of your face to determine if blepharoplasty is the right choice for you.

Focusing on Eyelid Surgery: The Need to Know

Eyelid surgery, commonly called an “eyelid lift” and technically named blepharoplasty, helps restore a more youthful, alert appearance to the eyes and can even expand a patient’s view. Many people are not exactly sure what this procedure entails and come to the Wise Center for Plastic Surgery in northern New Jersey with a lot of questions. It is always our pleasure to educate our patients, and below are answers to some of the most common questions we are asked about eyelid surgery.

Upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both?Close-up portrait of young and beautiful woman with the virtual hologram on her eyes (laser medicine and security technology concept)

Blepharoplasty can correct the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. This procedure is customized to meet the individual needs of the patient, and during your consultation, Dr. Wise will evaluate the skin around your eyes to determine the best options for you.

What can eyelid surgery improve?

Eyelid surgery can effectively improve the following:

  • Permanent puffiness (fat deposits) above or below the eyes
  • Loose skin, wrinkles, and fine lines around the eyes (including crow’s feet)
  • Drooping skin in the lower eyelid that pulls the lid away from the eye
  • Impaired vision from sagging tissues in the upper eyelids

Who are ideal candidates?

Dr. Wise considers the following to be excellent candidates for blepharoplasty: 1) Patients who have sagging skin and puffiness around the eyes, and 2) Patients with wrinkles, fine lines, and bags around the eyes. Non-smoking individuals in good health with a positive attitude are ideal candidates. Dr. Wise will carefully evaluate patients who have a serious eye condition in order to determine if eyelid surgery is right for them.

What is the recovery like?

Eyelid surgery results in minimal bruising and swelling, and most patients return to work after just one week of recovery. Many of Dr. Wise’s blepharoplasty patients typically report little postoperative discomfort.

New Jersey Liquid Facelift

Woman receiving cosmetic treatment of injectables for problem areas on her forehead, crowsfeet, and nasolabial foldsThe face is a common area where aging is first apparent. Over time, environmental elements combined with normal facial expressions cause fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of facial volume. These conditions continue to worsen and develop into deep creases, loose folds, and sunken features, causing people to appear older than they actually are. While many individuals desire surgical procedures, such as facelifts and eyelid lifts, others are opting for cosmetic treatments through a liquid facelift.

At the Wise Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer the liquid facelift procedure for patients who wish to restore a revitalized appearance to their face without the recovery time that invasive surgery requires.

What is the Liquid Facelift?

The liquid facelift is a cosmetic treatment that uses a combination of injectables and fillers to smooth out skin and add fullness to the face. The result is a noticeably younger looking face.

Muscle Relaxers

As perhaps the most popular injectable in the world, BOTOX® Cosmetic treats wrinkles on the forehead, and around the eyes and lips. Derived from the protein, botulinum toxin A, BOTOX® provides a smoother appearance to the face by relaxing the facial muscles over a long period of time. Dysport® and XEOMIN® are other neurotoxin injectables that, like BOTOX®, eliminate wrinkles caused by facial contractions.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers are used to soften wrinkles, reduce smile lines, and diminish nasolabial folds by literally “filling in” wrinkles and creases. Of the wide-range of fillers that are available, we carry the following:

  • Restylane®
  • JUVÉDERM®
  • Perlane®
  • RADIESSE®
  • BELOTERO BALANCE®
  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™
  • Sculptra® Aesthetic

The fillers that we use are made out of natural substances like hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite, so patients do not have to worry about allergic reactions occurring after treatment.

How is a Liquid Facelift Performed?

A personalized consultation will determine which areas of the face need improvement. A local anesthetic is applied to numb the targeted areas of the face, and the injectables and fillers are then strategically injected. This procedure usually takes less than an hour to complete, and most patients are able to return to work immediately afterwards.

The Wise Center for Plastic Surgery, in New Jersey, also offers Fat Transfer. This procedure effectively removes excess fat cells from one or more areas of the body (e.g., abdomen, hips, thighs) using liposuction. The fat cells are purified and then strategically injected into different areas of the face to add fullness and provide a younger-looking appearance.

When Does Insurance Cover Eyelid Surgery?

Plastic surgery procedures that are undergone for purely cosmetic purposes are not generally covered by health insurance. Insurance companies will usually pay for reconstructive surgery to repair abnormalities caused by congenital defects, trauma, or disease. However, if a procedure is performed in order to restore function and a normal appearance, insurance may cover the cost.

Eyelid surgery, technically called “blepharoplasty,” is a procedure that removes excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Dr. Wise uses a technique that results in the upper eyelid incisions hidden within the natural crease of the lid, and the lower lid incisions are made within the lower eyelid so there are no visible scars.

Closeup of an eye before, with the removed area highlighted, and after eyelid surgery

Insurance companies do not generally cover the lower eyelid blepharoplasty, but upper blepharoplasty is usually covered if an examination by an ophthalmologist determines that droopiness of the upper eyelid impairs vision. This qualifies the surgery as necessary to restore function to the eye, and the improved appearance of the eye is an added benefit. You may click here for more information on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons‘ recommended insurance coverage criteria for blepharoplasty.

The cost of blepharoplasty is among the lowest of all facial cosmetic surgeries, so even if insurance only covers the upper eyelid surgery, most patients choose to undergo lower blepharoplasty as well. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average surgeon fee for eyelid surgery varies, and the entire cost of surgery depends on the technique used and other factors, such as facility fees and region of the country where the surgery is performed. When it comes to plastic surgery, you get what you pay for, and cutting corners for cheaper surgery can have serious repercussions.

Dr. Wise is a face and neck specialist and has performed thousands of eyelid lifts. If you’re interested in blepharoplasty or any other plastic surgery procedure, please contact the practice of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise.
