What Is Septoplasty?

shutterstock_154931465Every year, thousands of men and women undergo some form of nose surgery. Nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) can be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve the function of the inner part of the nose. One of the most commonly performed procedures to improve nasal function is septoplasty.

As the name suggests, septoplasty corrects problems associated with the septum. The septum is the interior part of the nose that separates the left and right nostrils, and it is comprised of bone and cartilage. Septoplasty surgery straightens crooked bone and cartilage inside of the nose (a deviated septum). This procedure is regularly performed to correct the following conditions:

  • Snoring

  • Sleep Apnea

  • Chronic Sinus Issues

  • Allergies

  • Vertigo

Septoplasty can also be performed to remove nasal polyps (growths of inflamed tissue) and improve irregular breathing problems caused by deformities from birth or traumatic events.

Surgery is done with the patient under general anesthesia and takes less than a couple hours to perform. Incisions are made inside of the nose, where the mucosa (layer of soft tissue that lines the nasal passages) is separated from the bone and cartilage. If the septum is badly deviated, then certain portions of it may be entirely removed or repositioned in the nose. Once the cartilage is straightened, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Since septoplasty is performed entirely through the nostrils, patients don’t have to worry about any external scarring. After the procedure is complete, the nose will be packed with gauze and wrapped with bandages to limit postoperative bleeding. A few days of downtime will be needed for recovery, but patients are able to return after about a week.

Septoplasty is a very effective procedure that typically rids individuals of all prior nasal problems. The results of surgery are long lasting, and patients not only see a noticeable improvement in breathing, but they also generally develop a new sense of self-confidence.

If you suffer from any of the above listed symptoms, perhaps the problem exists because of a deviated septum. At the Wise Center For Plastic Surgery, we understand how discouraging it can be to live with sinus problems, which is why we dedicate ourselves to helping you achieve all of your goals. To schedule a consultation with our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Wise, please call (888) 295-6933 or fill out our online contact form today. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Revision Rhinoplasty: Who Is A Good Candidate?

shutterstock_158845361Altering the shape and/or internal structure of the nose can be a life changing experience and profoundly affect a person’s confidence and general well-being. Unfortunately, circumstances, such as developmental conditions, lack of experience by the surgeon, or the patient’s healing process, can leave the nose without any improvement. This often leaves the patient feeling frustrated and unsatisfied with the overall results of their rhinoplasty procedure.

Also known as “secondary rhinoplasty,” revision rhinoplasty can improve the aesthetic aspects, as well as correct functional problems of the nose that were not achieved with their primary rhinoplasty surgery. At our New Jersey practice, Dr. Jeffrey Wise frequently performs rhinoplasty for men and women of all age groups. In fact, a select number of his patients come to him for specifically for revision purposes after their goals were not met from their original rhinoplasty.

Good Candidates

Although anyone who is unhappy with the outcome of a prior rhinoplasty is a candidate for revision, most patients who desire a secondary procedure wish to improve one or more of the following:

  • Pinched tip

  • Turned up nostrils

  • Creases around the nose

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Scooped out profile

Revision rhinoplasty is typically more complex than the original procedure due to scarring and less cartilage in the nose. The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. If possible, the same incision patterns will be used during surgery to lessen the chances of additional scarring occurring afterwards.

If you are unpleased with the overall appearance of your nose or are having persistent breathing problems associated with it, feel free to contact Wise Center For Plastic Surgery today. Call (888) 295-6933 or fill out our online contact form to schedule your consultation. Dr. Wise is a double board-certified plastic surgeon and heavily focuses on procedures that improve the look and function of the nose.

Putting Your Best Face Forward in 2014

shutterstock_161616533With 2014 finally here, most of us are beginning to put our New Year’s goals in motion. Attaining a “new you” usually consists of common resolutions like losing weight, quitting smoking, or spending more time with your family. Maybe achieving a youthful facial appearance is what you’ve always desired. However, reducing the signs of aging on the face is easier said than done. This is why our New Jersey practice offers many non-surgical methods to diminish facial imperfections, leaving you looking younger and more attractive.

Injectables & Fillers

The development of wrinkles and creases on the face are an inevitable part of the aging process. To combat these flaws, we carry BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® to eliminate wrinkles on the forehead, corner of the eyes (crow’s feet), and lines above the upper lip.

We also have an array of fillers that effectively add fullness to various areas of the face. Approved by the FDA, JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are commonly used to fill in creases around the nose, mouth, and jaw line to naturally volumize the face. Other popular FDA-approved fillers that we carry include RADIESSE® and Sculptra®, which are composed of the natural substances like calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic acid.

We are pleased to have been selected as a center of excellence by Allergan. As a result, we are one of an elite group of practices to offer JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, which is a new filler approved for enhancement of the cheek area with results that last up to 2 years.

Since all of the fillers that we use are composed of substances that are naturally found in the body, patients do not need to worry about any allergy testing beforehand.

Facial Implants

In addition to injectables and fillers, facial implants are another option for facial rejuvenation. PermaLip™ lip implants are composed of soft and flexible silicone to permanently increase the size of the lips, while still maintaining a natural appearance.

Laser Skin Resurfacing / Intense Pulse Light (IPL) / Photofacial

Perhaps your skin suffers from blemishes like acne scars, irregularities in skin tone, or hyperpigmentation from years of sun exposure. Laser skin resurfacing applies intense pulses of light directly to the skin to eliminate these imperfections to add a revitalizing facial appearance.

Whether your New Year’s resolution is to get in the best shape of your life or finally drop the smoking habit, it always wise to make sure you put your best face forward. Plus, with the minimal downtime that exists with these forms of facial treatment, you won’t have to worry about missing out anything in 2014.

We hope you have an amazing year and look forward to helping you with any cosmetic procedures that you desire. Scheduling a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Wise, has never been easier. Call our New Jersey practice at (888) 295-6933 or fill out our online contact form today. We’ll help you put your best face forward in 2014!

Get The Full Luscious Lips You’ve Always Wanted

Puckered female lips with pink lipstickA crucial part of projecting an attractive appearance is the look of full, noticeable lips. However, not every person is able to naturally achieve this facial aspect. With the addition of the aging process, the lips only become thinner and more wrinkled over time. This prompts many individuals to undergo cosmetic lip enhancement procedures. Among the most popular forms of lip augmentation treatments are the injections of fillers and the insertion of lip implants, which Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise regularly performs at his New Jersey practice.

Injectable Fillers

FDA-approved fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Belatero are among the most popular options for adding volume to the lips. After they are injected in the lips, these fillers provide immediate fullness that last months at a time. JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® mainly consist of hyaluronic acid.  This substance is naturally found in the human body, and these fillers harmlessly dissipate through the body’s metabolic process.

Lip Implants

Lip implants offer individuals a permanent way of enhancing their lips. At Wise Center for Plastic Surgery, our surgeon uses the revolutionary PermaLip™ lip implants. These implants are FDA-approved and made of a high-grade soft silicone that can effectively mold to the exact contours of the lips. After an anesthetic is used to numb the lips, the PermaLip™ implants are inserted through tiny, 2-3 millimeter entry points at the inside corners of the mouth.

Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon who looks forward to helping you attain lips that are full and attractive in appearance. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Wise, feel free to call (888) 295-6933 or conveniently fill out our online contact form today.

How Long Does A Facelift Last?

Model with fair skin and dark brown hairDuring their consultations, patients often ask how long their facelift results will last. In general, the longevity of a facelift is between seven to ten years. With the Wise Signature Lift, the longevity of these results can greatly increase, but other factors that are unique to each patient ultimately determine exactly how long the results will last, including:

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Genetics

  • Diet

  • Environment

To ensure that the effects of your facelift last as long as possible, there are a few things that can be done to preserve your results.

Sunscreen

Obviously the sun’s UVA and UVB rays have harmful effects on the skin. It’s always good to apply sunscreen anytime facial skin is exposed to the sun. Always remember to apply sunscreen even when it’s overcast because the effects of the sun can become intensified due to cloud reflections.

Retinoid Cream

Derived from Vitamin A, this type of cream can prevent wrinkles and pigmentation from forming on the face, while keeping the skin hydrated. Aside from keeping skin smooth, retinoid cream promotes the production of collagen to keep the skin from sagging.

Antioxidants

A healthy diet will surely help to keep your skin looking great. Try to consume foods that are high in antioxidants, such as, blueberries, pecans, artichokes, and potatoes. Antioxidants slow down the aging process by protecting the body’s cells from oxidation, which keeps skin looking healthy and youthful.

Touch-Ups

Even though the effects of a facelift are expected to be long-lasting, it is not uncommon for patients to return every so often to undergo touch-up procedures. Some of the most popular treatments include Botox® injections, dermal fillers,  laser resurfacing, Intense Pulse Light (IPL), and Ultherapy.

By following these helpful tips, combined with the hand of an experienced surgeon, there should be no reason why the results of your facelift should not endure many years.
