Eyelid surgery, commonly called an “eyelid lift” and technically named blepharoplasty, helps restore a more youthful, alert appearance to the eyes and can even expand a patient’s view. Many people are not exactly sure what this procedure entails and come to the Wise Center for Plastic Surgery in northern New Jersey with a lot of questions. Upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both?
Blepharoplasty can correct the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. This procedure is customized to meet the individual needs of the patient, and during your consultation, Dr. Wise will evaluate the skin around your eyes to determine the best options for you.
What can eyelid surgery improve?
Eyelid surgery can effectively improve the following:
- Permanent puffiness (fat deposits) above or below the eyes
- Loose skin, wrinkles, and fine lines around the eyes (including crow’s feet)
- Drooping skin in the lower eyelid that pulls the lid away from the eye
- Impaired vision from sagging tissues in the upper eyelids
Who are ideal candidates?
Dr. Wise considers the following to be excellent candidates for blepharoplasty: 1) Patients who have sagging skin and puffiness around the eyes, and 2) Patients with wrinkles, fine lines, and bags around the eyes. Non-smoking individuals in good health with a positive attitude are ideal candidates. Dr. Wise will carefully evaluate patients who have a serious eye condition in order to determine if eyelid surgery is right for them.
What is the recovery like?
Eyelid surgery results in minimal bruising and swelling, and most patients return to work after just one week of recovery. Many of Dr. Wise’s blepharoplasty patients typically report little postoperative discomfort.
