Reduce Wrinkles with BOTOX® in New Jersey

Aging and especially premature aging can be frustrating. Wrinkles and fine lines can make you look older than you really are and detract from your natural beauty. Some wrinkles like smile lines and crow’s feet can occur because of joy or happy occasions, but over time they seem to be permanent and still showing up even when you aren’t smiling. With Dr. Wise, we can help reduce the effect of aging with BOTOX in NJ.

BOTOX revolutionized the cosmetic industry and has been a staple in plastic surgeons’ arsenals ever since. First approved by the FDA in 1989 for other medical uses, the cosmetic benefits of the serum were quickly discovered, and it was approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

BOTOX for “Crow’s Feet”

One of the most common areas of the face that BOTOX is used for is the area around the eyes, also known as “crow’s feet.” Crow’s feet are tiny wrinkles that begin at the outside corner of the eyes and fan outward, much like the shape of a bird’s foot. “Laugh lines” is a slightly more flattering term for these little imperfections, but most would agree that giving them a nicer name doesn’t make them any more desirable.

For many people, crow’s feet can begin to appear as early as the mid-20s and can worsen as a result of smoking and increased sun exposure. Although wrinkles around the eyes may seem impossible to avoid, there are actually plenty of preventative and corrective solutions available.

What Causes Crow’s Feet and Other Wrinkles?

Cosmetic uses for BOTOX usually center around the reduction of wrinkles near the face and neck. Wrinkles are a frustrating sign of aging, but understanding and stopping the underlying cause of wrinkles leads to the success of BOTOX injections. While some wrinkles form due to aging or your skin’s hereditary properties, some are preventable.

Thin Skin

Unlike other areas of the face, the skin around the eyes is very delicate and lacks fatty tissue. As aging progresses, collagen is lost and the skin loses elasticity, making the eyes one of the first places to reveal that you’re growing older.

Muscle Contraction

Squinting, laughing, and smiling can cause crow’s feet, forehead lines and creases, and other wrinkles to appear. Over time, these habitual facial expressions can lead to wrinkles that are present even when the facial muscles are relaxed. Repeated use of a muscle over time will begin to wrinkle the overlaying skin, which is where BOTOX comes in.

Sunlight

Overexposure to sunlight is one of the leading causes of premature aging and wrinkles. Sunlight causes free radicals in the skin to damage cellular DNA, which in turn decreases the elasticity, resilience, and suppleness of the skin.

Benefits of BOTOX in NJ

While natural remedies can be effective, BOTOX takes wrinkle prevention and smoothing to the next level. As one of the first injectable treatments in the aesthetic world, the formula and effectiveness have been honed over many years. BOTOX is a non-surgical alternative to a traditional facelift, neck lift, or eye lift procedure.

The injections are much simpler than surgical options, don’t require any incisions or sutures, and downtime is minimal. The wide variety of uses makes it a versatile treatment for many cosmetic or medical conditions involving the overuse of a specific muscle. Benefits include the following:

  • Non-surgical facial rejuvenation
  • Short procedure time of about 30 minutes
  • Minimally invasive, effective wrinkle relaxer
  • Nearly painless treatment
  • No downtime
  • Short, minimal recovery period
  • Low risk of side effects
  • Smooths wrinkles in the forehead, around the nose, eyes, mouth and chin
  • Can be used for younger patients to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place

How BOTOX Works

Botox helps prevent the muscles that cause wrinkles from contracting. The BOTOX serum is injected directly into muscles that cause wrinkles or generate other medical conditions by clenching. Once injected, the formula is designed to temporarily block nerve signals in the muscle, causing it not to contract. The reduction in muscle movement smooths out surface wrinkles and provides a more youthful appearance. BOTOX can also be used by younger patients who would like to proactively use it to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Even when smiling, laughing, or squinting, the wrinkles are mostly or completely invisible after treatment. Results generally will last about three to four months.

BOTOX and Lip Treatments

There are a few misconceptions about BOTOX, including that it can be used as a lip filler. While some plastic surgeons use BOTOX to smooth wrinkles near the lips, in general, there are other solutions that are better for plumping lips.

The primary use of BOTOX is a reduction in muscle contraction, which causes an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles. However, BOTOX does not add volume to the lips the way lip fillers do. It can be used in a lip flip treatment to create an attractive, fuller upper lip or to lift the corners of a drooping mouth, but it does not fill the lips the way a filler will. If you desire larger or plumper lips, Dr. Wise can help you explore lip treatments with BOTOX or fillers.

BOTOX Procedure Steps

The process of injecting BOTOX, or botulinum toxin, into the muscles is a very precise and delicate procedure. A small syringe is prepared with the recommended dosage of BOTOX, and the thin needle is used to inject the serum directly into the necessary muscles.

The number of injections you need will vary based on the size of your treatment area and the severity of your symptoms. Typically, injections near the outer eye for crow’s feet will require approximately 3 injections. The entire procedure can take as little as 15 minutes but may take up to an hour depending on the treatment areas and the number of injections.

Expected Results after BOTOX

You will notice the results of your BOTOX injections in New Jersey almost immediately. The serum works quickly to limit muscle movement in a certain area, and you’ll quickly notice that your wrinkles are smoothed out. If you receive BOTOX for a medical condition, you will see an immediate reduction in your symptoms.

BOTOX typically lasts a couple of months, but over time the formula is broken down and absorbed into the body. You will eventually need to get additional BOTOX injections if you wish to maintain your smooth and youthful look.

How long is recovery after BOTOX?

Recovery is usually very easy after BOTOX. Any side effects, such as redness or slight swelling, are usually very mild. Dr. Wise will provide instructions for care after you leave the clinic, but patients are able to return to their normal activities very quickly, usually on the same day as their treatment. It is recommended that you do not rub the treated area after your procedure to avoid shifting the BOTOX to another area of the face. Otherwise, you are able to return to work or your usual daily activities.

Your aftercare instructions will include the following:

  • Apply a cold compress to help minimize or prevent redness or swelling at the injection sites
  • Avoid strenuous or vigorous activities until the following day
  • Do not expose yourself to intense heat or direct sunlight for the remainder of the day
  • Do not drink alcohol or take painkillers for 1-2 days
  • Wait for six hours before lying down

Xeomin

Xeomin is an FDA-approved treatment to smooth lines, wrinkles and creases. The active ingredient is the same neurotoxin as BOTOX, but Xeomin has differences that many of our patients appreciate. Xeomin contains no additives, and many patients we treat are very pleased with the smoothing effect of this injectable. While Dysport and BOTOX are also effective anti-aging products, Xeomin is manufactured with a specialized process that removes what is called “accessory proteins” that provide no benefit in facial smoothing.

How Does Xeomin Work?

Xeomin works to smooth lines and wrinkles caused by constant facial expressions. This injectable product blocks the release of specific body chemicals that cause the muscles to contract, smoothing frown lines. The beauty of Xeomin is its purity.

Dysport

Dysport can work wonders on smoothing frown lines around the brows by limiting facial motions. This product functions similarly to BOTOX, but produces a faster result, and is a thinner formula for a very natural look. Many patients prefer Dysport because the smoothing effect appears more quickly, which can be important if you are planning to attend an event and want to look your best. Results last up to four months for most patients.

How Does Dysport Work?

Dysport is a prescription medication that can only be used by a licensed healthcare professional. The active ingredient is a botulinum neurotoxin that works to block nerve signals that trigger facial motions. The treatment takes only twenty to thirty minutes to complete. While both BOTOX and Dysport are made from the same neurotoxin, these products are slightly different. Dysport is a thinner formula that diffuses more quickly, spreading into a wider area for a more natural look in smoothing the brow.

The Secret Behind Excellent Results

Whether you use BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin to smooth lines and wrinkles, the beauty of the results will be the direct result of the skills of the injector. Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise is a leading, board-certified plastic surgeon who is known for achieving remarkably natural results with each of these injectable products. He is recognized as an expert injector by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery —  a coveted title awarded only to board-certified plastic surgeons, dermatologists or oculoplastic surgeons with specialized training in injectable techniques and products.
