How to combat aging at different stages of life

Everyone wants to slow or reverse the effects of aging. There is a huge volume of information available online. Would it be better to use sesame oil or moisturizers? Is it important to cut back on processed foods? When should you start getting surgery? With so many options and so much conflicting advice, it can be difficult to know where to begin. This guide takes you through the best ways to combat aging at different stages of life.

Combating aging in your 20s

In your 20s, it might seem that aging is something you don’t have to worry about. While this might be accurate on the surface, it obscures the fact that you can get a head start in the fight against aging while you are still relatively young.

Maintaining a good level of fitness throughout your life is the most effective way to combat visible and invisible aging without surgery. It is particularly important to maintain a good level of fitness in your 20s because of the power of habit. Many studies show that the younger you set up good habits for health, the healthier you will be later on in your life. This has a very significant impact on your rate of aging.

More and more men and women in their 20s are choosing strategic Botox or Dysport injections. A program of injections before wrinkles become prominent can reduce their incidence later on.

If you have significant sun damage (or residual damage from acne) to your skin in your 20s, there are a number of procedures that can slow the onset of aging while clearing it up. Dermabrasion (or microdermabrasion) is a popular method which can be highly effective. This involves spraying tiny exfoliating crystals on the skin. The Wise Center offers a more modern and gentle forms of Microdermabrasion called SilkPeel which uses a dermal infusion method; dermal infusion pulls impurities out of the skin using vacuum pressure and infuses the skin with serum customized to your skin’s needs. Laser resurfacing is also very popular. Focused pulses of high-energy light are absorbed by water and substances in the skin called chromophores, which vaporize unwanted elements of the skin.

Regarding sun damage, though, prevention is better than cure. You can protect yourself from sun damage in the first place by using a broad spectrum sunscreen every day during all seasons of the year.

Aging in your 30s

Many signs of aging begin to become much more visible in your face during your 30s. These include changes in your neck, jowls and lower face. People in their 30s who have age-related concerns might find Ultherapy a good fit for them. This has the major advantage that it does not involve any surgery and is completely non-invasive. It is the only FDA-cleared procedure that lifts the eyebrow, neck and chin. It is also FDA-cleared to improve décolletage and wrinkles. Ultherapy is based on tried-and-tested ultrasound technologies. It has been proven to be safe in over 350,000 treatments across the world.

Many men in their 30s begin to experience unwanted hair loss. A number of effective treatments exist. Applying Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to the scalp releases growth factors that promote tissue production and promote regeneration. This has the major advantage that it requires no surgery. Applying Acell, a product that assists with wound healing, as part of a procedure called dermal matrix scaffolding is also a highly effective method to promote hair regrowth. Lastly, although hair transplant options like Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) are more invasive, they tend to yield optimal results.

Aging in your 40s

Men and women in their 40s who are concerned about sagging facial features or décolletage might find either a facelift or a mini-facelift a good solution.

Since wrinkles tend to see substantial growth in the 40s, injections of Botox, Dysport or fillers can be helpful in this decade. The earlier you get the injections, the greater the effect you can enjoy further down the line.

Aging in your 50s and beyond

Once in your 50s, prevention and minor procedures tend to have somewhat limited effects. Most people in this age range find that more aggressive procedures bear more fruit.

For this age group, facelifts and the Wise Signature Lift yield excellent results.

Many people begin to experience significant loss in facial firmness in their 50s, resulting in a somewhat hollow appearance. Fat transfers from elsewhere in the body to areas of the face that deflated such as the cheek area are a highly effective, natural way to even out the face and return to a significantly more youthful appearance.

Despite the general guidelines above, there are no absolutes as to when might be the best time to take different actions to combat ageing. What is best for you depends on your appearance and the way you feel about it. We should emphasize that prevention is the best form of aging gracefully. If you are sure to stay fit and use sunscreen while you are young, these can have a substantial impact on your appearance for many years.

The top 3 procedures to have you looking heavenly for the holidays

Want to look your very best this holiday season? If so, these three beautifying procedures are a must.

Blepharoplasty – schedule 1 month before the holidays

We all want to look bright-eyed and cheerful for the holidays, but if you experience laxity of the upper eyelid you may find yourself looking tired, run down, and certainly not in the holiday spirit. It’s normal for this laxity to occur with age as the delicate skin on the eyelid loses volume, but it can be rectified with blepharoplasty.

Also known as an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure which lifts lax tissue on the eyelid to make the eyes look brighter and more alert. It’s also possible to deal with “eye bags” underneath the eyes which are caused by loose fat pads which pull the eye downwards and create dark circles.

Results of blepharoplasty are almost immediate, but you will see some mild bruising and swelling in the area for a 1-2 weeks. If you schedule the procedure around a month before the holidays, you’ll be all healed up, with bright, beautiful eyes, just in time for the celebrations.

Botox – schedule around 2 weeks before the holidays

We’d all love to say goodbye to pesky lines and wrinkles before the holidays, and with Botox you can. Wrinkles occur as a result of repetitive movements of the facial muscles which cause skin to fold, often on the forehead and brow (causing “frown lines”) and around the eyes (“crows’ feet”). Botox temporarily weakens the muscles in order to prevent them from creating these lines and wrinkles, allowing you to enjoy a smoother complexion and a younger, more refreshed appearance.

Botox only takes a few minutes for Dr. Wise to inject and there is no recovery time, making it the perfect treatment to schedule in during the busy weeks leading up to the holidays. Results aren’t immediate and show themselves anywhere from 3 – 10 days after the procedure, so be sure to make an appointment 2 weeks before the holiday season. You’ll be able to enjoy the effects for up to three months, which is plenty of time to show off your youthful new looks over the seasonal celebrations.

Dermal fillers – schedule a few days before the holidays

It’s amazing what dermal fillers can do; from restoring facial volume in the cheeks, smoothing out acne scars, restoring volume to the eyes and lifting sagging skin to plumping the pout and eliminating deep wrinkles, the likes of Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma and Radiesse have some truly wonderful applications. With immediate results which last between six months to 2 years , there’s no wonder injectable fillers are on your to-do list before the holiday season.

There’s no downtime involved when having dermal fillers, but you should still give yourself a few days between the treatment and the holidays to completely heal. It’s not unusual to experience a little mild swelling and bruising, so by scheduling a two or three days in advance of the celebrations you can make sure you’re looking your absolute best.

Book your procedures now to secure your schedule by calling our office at 973-305-1400.

The lead-up to the holidays is one of the busiest times of year here at the Wise Center, so make sure you don’t miss out on your essential procedures – book your blepharoplasty, Botox and dermal fillers appointments as soon as you can!

Healthy Holiday Baking Swaps

A healthy body is beneficial for many reasons, including increasing the safety and efficacy of any plastic surgery procedure or treatment. When our bodies are healthy and running more efficiently, we heal faster, are better able to fight off sickness and disease, and have more energy. Following a healthy lifestyle can improve a person’s appearance (skin, teeth, nails, hair, and body contours), help them feel more confident, and increase their overall enjoyment and happiness in life.

The holidays are fast approaching, and this means there will likely be lots of enticing food around packed with empty calories. These tasty treats are terribly tempting when compared to traditional healthy alternatives, such as a veggie tray, but taste doesn’t have to be sacrificed for health. When baking your goodies this year, you can replace certain unhealthy ingredients with more beneficial stand-ins. These healthier swaps amp up the nutrients while cutting down on ingredients that contribute to health problems, making them both nutritious and delicious!

To get the most out of your baked goods this holiday season, try some of the following recipe swaps by replacing one cup of the main ingredient with one of the bulleted ingredients below it.

The Importance of Skin Care

A beautiful woman applying a skin care product to her nose on a white background

Taking care of your skin is one of the essential ways to combat the signs of aging. Although your skin will inevitably develop some fine lines and wrinkles as the collagen and elastin in it deteriorate over time, a healthy skin care regimen will help deter these negative side effects of growing older and keep your skin looking beautiful and youthful as long as possible.

Proper skin care requires four basic elements:

  1. Antioxidants

  • Protect skin from free radical cell damage by inhibiting oxidation reactions

  1. Growth Factors

  • Stimulate cellular growth and healing

  1. Retinol

  • A form of vitamin A that regulates epithelial cell growth, cell proliferation, and cellular differentiation

  1. Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

  • Protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation damage

Skin Care Products

At Wise Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer SkinMedica®, SkinCeuticals, and NEOCUTIS skin care products that contain these elements to provide our patients with beautifully radiant skin. These products help maintain youthful skin as you age, improve skin quality for those who already have signs of aging, and prolong the results of injectable treatments, laser skin resurfacing, facial peels, and other anti-aging procedures. Skin health is regenerated as these products work below the surface of the skin at the cellular level, and skin health is maintained as the cells are protected from harmful environmental elements. It is important to use these products every day, especially a broad-spectrum sunscreen, in order to protect and heal your skin from daily damage.

Our skin care products prevent and improve the following signs of aging:

  • Fine lines

  • Deep wrinkles

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Rough skin texture

  • Poor elasticity

The SkinMedica®, SkinCeutical, and NEOCUTIS products are not available for purchase over-the-counter (OTC) because they contain over 10 percent of active ingredients for dramatic improvement in skin quality (OTC products contain less than 2 percent). These high-quality products are only available through a physician’s office, where a skilled physician or aesthetician can evaluate your needs and recommend the best products for your individual condition.

If you are interested in achieving youthful, radiant skin, please call (888) 295-6933 or fill out our online contact form. We look forward to helping you with any and all of your skin care needs.

See Your Surgery Results BEFORE Surgery!

Many people are interested in undergoing facial plastic surgery, such as a facelift, laser skin resurfacing, fat transfer, and eyelid rejuvenation, but are hesitant because they are unsure of how they will look after the procedure. Imagine if you could know how the results of your surgical procedure would look before you ever enter the operating room. At Wise Center For Plastic Surgery, we offer imaging with an advanced system that allows patients to more effectively communicate their desires to Dr. Wise and determine if a particular procedure will achieve results that meet their aesthetic goals.

Three-Dimensional Imaging System

With Canfield’s VECTRA M3 Imaging System, Dr. Wise can simulate proposed before and after images of your desired surgery. Three high-resolution 36-megapixel color cameras capture detailed photographs of you from different angles, and then the VECTRA system quickly combines the images of you to create a fully rotatable 3-D image of your face and neck. Advanced computer software is used to analyze the images and simulate the corrections that can be made with facial plastic surgery.

A More Comprehensive Beauty Plan

Our state-of-the-art imaging system allows you and Dr. Wise to have a shared visual understanding of your beauty goals in order to develop a comprehensive plan to achieve these specific goals. The VECTRA M3 System will display a visual image of the desired changes you describe to the doctor, and this image will let you confirm that the result of those changes align with your aesthetic goals. This also grants Dr. Wise the ability to provide specific recommendations for your individual circumstances to achieve the particular appearance you desire. Since each person ages differently and has distinct physical structures, Dr. Wise uses an individualized approach to correct signs of aging, and the VECTRA M3 provides a visual aid to demonstrate the possible results of what can be achieved with your surgery.

Tips for Improving Wrinkles

It’s a given that time will take a toll on our skin, and no one can escape this unfortunate reality. We are constantly making facial expressions, and these contractions of the facial muscles stretch the skin. The middle layer of the skin, called the dermis, contains elastin fibers that give it the ability to return to its original form after being stretched. Over time, the dermis naturally loses elastin, and fine lines and wrinkles develop. These signs of aging are especially noticeable on people who smoke cigarettes and sun bathe often, as these habits drastically damage the skin’s resilience. For those who are already noticing signs of aging on their skin, try these tips for improving the appearance of existing wrinkles and keeping future ones at bay.

Renew With Retinoids

Topical retinoids, such as the Tri-Retinol Complex™, work by penetrating the skin’s surface and rejuvenating it from the deep layers upward. Retinoids stimulate your skin’s natural production of collagen and promote cell turnover to fight wrinkles and produce beautiful, radiant skin.

Volumize With MoisturizerA girl applying skin care cream to her face

When the skin is dry, wrinkles are more pronounced, and our skin retains less moisture as we age. Moisturizers, such as SkinMedica® Ultra Sheer Moisturizer and NEOCUTIS LUMIÈRE Bio-restorative Eye Cream with PSP®, hydrate and plump the skin to reduce wrinkles.

Protect With Sunscreen

To prevent existing wrinkles from worsening and future wrinkles from developing, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. The JOURNÉE Bio-restorative Day Cream with PSP® Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 and Daily Physical Defense™ SPF 30+ Sunscreen are great products for moisturizing the skin and protecting it from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

Prepare With Primer

After moisturizing your skin but before applying foundation, use a makeup primer as a base to fill in wrinkles and fine lines. This base will soften the appearance of wrinkles and keep your makeup looking fresh longer.

Here at the Wise Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of skin care products and aesthetic treatments to drastically reduce the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles. Fillers and injectables are also safe and effective ways to treat early to moderate signs of aging without surgery. If you have significant wrinkles and sagging skin, Dr. Wise offers the Wise Revitalize Lift and the Wise Signature Lift for complete facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise is one of the few surgeons in the country who is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon. His extensive education, training, and experience in facial plastic surgery have given him comprehensive knowledge of the structures of the face and how to improve them. If you are interested in improving the signs of aging in your skin, please call (888) 295-6933 or fill out our online contact form today to schedule your consultation with Dr. Wise.

Retinoids for Gorgeous Skin

A beautiful woman smiling with glowing skin and flower petals around her on a glowing yellow backgroundEveryone wants to have gorgeous, glowing skin with an even complexion. However, hormones and environmental factors can lead to acne, blotchiness, sun spots, wrinkles, and other blemishes on the skin. While a cleansing regimen and use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen can help prevent some blemishes and signs of aging from developing, it is very difficult for many people to maintain clear skin. Those who struggle with skin problems are in luck because retinoids can treat acne, signs of aging, psoriasis, and warts, and an overall improved skin texture can be achieved.

Topical retinoids were introduced in the early 1970s for acne treatment and have been hailed as a remedy for almost any skin problem since. The efficacy of retinoids has been demonstrated with extensive studies. They are vitamin A products that promote cell turnover and the development of new skin cells. This unclogs pores and exfoliates the damaged outer layer of the skin as new cells are produced more rapidly. The old, damaged skin sheds, and new, healthy skin becomes apparent. This eliminates blemishes such as acne, sun spots, warts, and skin buildup from psoriasis. Retinoids also boost collagen production, which increases the skin’s thickness and elasticity and results in improved skin texture and diminished wrinkles and fine lines.

Retinoids should be the foundation of any skincare regimen, and people should begin using them when they are about 20 years old. Because of the powerful ingredients in retinoids, products containing them in high enough concentrations to be effective are only available by prescription. Retinoid products may cause dryness, flaking, and redness at first. Apply only a small amount every second or third night and gradually increase the frequency of application over time to help your skin adjust.

Discover the benefits of our skincare products, including the Tri-Retinol Complex™ with retinoids, available by prescription only.

For beautifully radiant skin, please contact the practice of Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise. Retinoids can provide significant improvement to skin quality. However, patients with more extensive signs of aging can benefit from facelift surgery to eliminate wrinkles and sagging skin. Please call 973-658-4019 or fill out our online contact form today to schedule your consultation.

When Does Insurance Cover Eyelid Surgery?

Plastic surgery procedures that are undergone for purely cosmetic purposes are not generally covered by health insurance. Insurance companies will usually pay for reconstructive surgery to repair abnormalities caused by congenital defects, trauma, or disease. However, if a procedure is performed in order to restore function and a normal appearance, insurance may cover the cost.

Eyelid surgery, technically called “blepharoplasty,” is a procedure that removes excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Dr. Wise uses a technique that results in the upper eyelid incisions hidden within the natural crease of the lid, and the lower lid incisions are made within the lower eyelid so there are no visible scars.

Closeup of an eye before, with the removed area highlighted, and after eyelid surgery

Insurance companies do not generally cover the lower eyelid blepharoplasty, but upper blepharoplasty is usually covered if an examination by an ophthalmologist determines that droopiness of the upper eyelid impairs vision. This qualifies the surgery as necessary to restore function to the eye, and the improved appearance of the eye is an added benefit. You may click here for more information on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons‘ recommended insurance coverage criteria for blepharoplasty.

The cost of blepharoplasty is among the lowest of all facial cosmetic surgeries, so even if insurance only covers the upper eyelid surgery, most patients choose to undergo lower blepharoplasty as well. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average surgeon fee for eyelid surgery varies, and the entire cost of surgery depends on the technique used and other factors, such as facility fees and region of the country where the surgery is performed. When it comes to plastic surgery, you get what you pay for, and cutting corners for cheaper surgery can have serious repercussions.

Dr. Wise is a face and neck specialist and has performed thousands of eyelid lifts. If you’re interested in blepharoplasty or any other plastic surgery procedure, please contact the practice of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jeffrey B. Wise. Please fill out our online contact form or call 973-658-4019 today to schedule an appointment.

The Ultimate Anti-Aging Diet

There are numerous treatments and plastic surgery procedures available to reduce wrinkles and fight the signs of aging, but many are surprised to learn that the signs of aging can also be thwarted from the inside out. Although the results will not be as dramatic as plastic surgery, a consistent dose of these anti-aging foods can put off wrinkles and give your skin a healthy, youthful glow.

The Top 5 Age-Fighting Foods

1. Berries

Assorted berriesDark berries, especially those that are black or blue in color, have the highest concentration of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the body against free radicals, which can damage healthy skin cells. Berries also contain vitamin C, which helps repair damaged body tissues and has been linked to skin cancer prevention.

2. Oysters

OystersOysters are an excellent source of zinc, which helps to create collagen, the structural support system for the skin. Zinc also helps to maintain stronger nails and leads to healthy hair and scalp. If oysters don’t please your palate, you can also find zinc in red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, crab, and lobster.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes Research has shown that regular consumption of lycopene and other carotenoids, which are found in tomatoes, results in less sunburn. Interestingly, cooked tomatoes, such as tomato paste, actually contain more lycopene than raw tomatoes. Sweet potatoes and fruits like cantaloupe and mangoes also contain carotenoids, which will help resist the damaging effects of the sun.

4. Green Vegetables

Assorted green vegetablesDark green, leafy vegetables like kale and spinach are full of antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect against the negative effects of ultraviolet exposure. Vegetables are also an excellent source of vitamins, including vitamins A, C, K, and E. Vitamin E in particular helps prevent cell damage, which leads to healthier, younger-looking skin.

5. Whole Grains

WheatWhole grains, such as oats, whole wheat, and brown rice, are full of vitamins and minerals that provide a myriad of anti-aging benefits. When whole grains are refined, they lose most of the vitamins that contribute to increased health and beauty. Look for the word “whole” on the nutrition facts label. When “whole grain,” “whole wheat,” or “whole [other grain]” are listed as the first ingredient, this guarantees that you are getting all of the nutrients of the whole grain.
